Alexander Brodsky. Architect between art and the real world
In course of the international festival Culturescapes Moscow 2012
Alexander Brodsky, an architect and artist from Moscow, is probably the most interesting personality of Russia's contemporary architecture scene. Born in 1955, the qualified architect was a leading member of the «Paper Architects», an opposition group in the Soviet Union in the 1980s. His atmospheric buildings and installations developed in the past years are always manifestos of the search for a new Russian identity.
A photographic exhibition on Brodsky’s most important buildings will be held at the S AM Swiss Architecture museum in course of the international festival Culturescapes Moscow 2012. The photographs were taken by Yuri Palmin, a renowned Russian architecture photographer, who has been documenting Brodsky’s work for quite some time. The poetry that is inherent to all of Brodsky’s projects is perceptible in these images. In addition, the photos are valuable testimonials of the artist Brodsky’s spatial intervention, since the pavilions and installations usually have a short life span.
In addition to the exhibition, an event with Alexander Brodsky will take place at the S AM on the day of the opening. An introductory lecture on the state of architecture in today’s Russia by Elena Kossovskaja is followed by a keynote speech by Alexander Brodsky. The event is completed by a discussion with Alexander Brodsky and Peter Märkli, moderated by the artistic director of the Museum, Hubertus Adam.
