Short lectures and panel discussion: Basel Unbuilt

6 PM

Short lectures and panel discussion 'Basel Unbuilt' in cooperation with Christoph Merian Verlag.

Basel is in a constant state of flux, with the cityscape and skyline changing rapidly at times – consider the pharmaceutical buildings of Roche and Novartis in Basel or the transformation areas such as Erlenmatt and Lysbüchel.

Behind every new building and every transformation concept, there are often dozens of options and variants that were not realized for a variety of reasons – because the time was not (or no longer) right, because there was not enough money or because the voters wanted to build something else (or nothing at all). Unrealized projects reveal what other paths Basel could have taken in terms of urban development and at the same time enable a better understanding of current developments and what has actually been built.

Two years ago, the book 'Basel ungebaut' was published, in which eleven authors discuss architectural and urban development opportunities based on selected examples from the last two centuries. Three of the contributors to the book will speak on the podium about Barfüsserplatz and Heuwaage – two neuralgic locations of past and probably future urban development. The discussion will also address the questions of what unrealized plans reveal about the city's potential – 'What If' – and how unrealized projects lead a 'second life' in the architects' future work.

The event will take place in the former Barfüsserkirche, which 140 years ago was neither allowed to house the Swiss National Museum nor was it converted into a 'public bath' shortly afterwards, but which also did not disappear through demolition to make way for a new school building.
