S AM FM: Experiments in Ecological Radio

In a discipline so bound up with the visual, how might listening open alternative kinds of inquiry into the built environment?

Coinciding with Basel Architecture Week, the S AM is inviting the international arts cooperative Soundcamp to bring their practice of ecological radio to Basel. Over the course of five days, the cooperative will take up residence in the museum spaces and transmit live sounds from un-seen and less-heard spaces and situations. In contrast to the placeless-ness of conventional radio, this experiment aims to recuperate the particularities of places and situations where sounds and voices come together in a broadcast. The museum will be transformed into an open radio studio, where the public is invited to come by, observe, and actively take part. In this way, «S AM FM» uses radio as a way to explore multiple ecologies: to render perceptible the spaces and environments around us on the one hand, and to create new constellations of people and practice on the other.

The live, continuous program – broadcast simultaneously at soundcamp.radio – will be accompanied by a series of participatory workshops and performances around the theme of ‹hidden spaces› by invited artists during the opening hours of the museum.

‹S AM FM› is a project developed in collaboration with LINA, the European architecture platform co-funded by Creative Europe.

About Soundcamp:
Soundcamp (2013 –) are an arts cooperative based at Stave Hill Ecological Park in Rotherhithe and Work Shop 1 in Loughborough Junction, as well as in Glasgow, Berlin, Crete, The Hague. As part of the Acoustic Commons network, they coordinate the long-form radio broadcast Reveil (2014 –), and a series of soundcamps on dawn chorus day each year. They are interested in DIY infrastructures that can move live sounds between places and situations, and give attention to less heard human and non-human communities. Their work appears as broadcasts, workshops, sound devices and events.
