S AM FM: FROM CENTRE TO PERIPHERY
3–4 PM
An intervention by Sigrid Schmeisser
As part of the project ‹S AM FM›, S AM and Soundcamp are inviting three fellows from the LINA program to perform interventions during the continuous radio broadcast.
Centre to Periphery is a long-term project by Sigrid Schmeisser that investigates landfills as contested post-natural landscapes obscured by modern waste management networks and language. Yet, matter still lingers and accumulates within these landbodies that she terms the «geospatial other». In the context of «S AM FM», contested spaces related to waste streams in the city of Basel are investigated. Given the entanglement of human-, land-, and water-bodies as record keepers of the unfolding Wasteocene, Schmeisser assumes the role of a narrator to amplify their hidden histories. Both live environmental sound and a voice-over offers a counter-narrative on the alleged periphery. The intervention encompasses three performances on successive days, live-streamed from three different sites in the Basel region.
About Sigrid Schmeisser:
Sigrid Schmeisser is a designer and researcher whose practice is characterized by a site-responsive approach resulting in a range of multi-media based outcomes. A focus lies on investigating landfills as post-natural landscapes within the long-term project «Centre to Periphery». Chapters include a lecture performance (premiered at Dutch Design Week 23), ongoing documentary photography, artistic publications, and an award-winning essay (Avery Review, July 2024). A second interest are more-than-human relationships including species with invasive behavior, and foregrounding plants as agents into complex ecosystems (Raccogliere Magazine).
Where: Deponie Elbisgraben (Liestal, CH), Hardwald Water Purification Plant (Muttenz, CH), Cycling path next to remediated Novartis areal, Huningue (FR) – linked via livestream to the S AM Swiss Architecture Museum
The performance will be livestreamed on soundcamp.radio.
A project developed with the support of LINA, the European architecture platform co-funded by Creative Europe.
