The Digital Mock-Up: Guided Tour and Discussion with Astrid Staufer and Tom Bachmann

Mock-ups are all about simulating, testing, optimizing,… But while we wander through our ongoing ‘Mock-Up’ exhibition at the S AM, we may sometimes wonder if the means justify the ends. Physical Mock-ups are pricey and may eventually add up to the notoriously bad waste balance of the Swiss construction industry. This special guided tour will be accompanied and commented by architect Astrid Staufer. In the second part of the event, we will delve into the virtual realm with VR specialist Tom Bachmann (HEGIAS). Equipped with VR glasses, participants can see for themselves what new possibilities digitization in architecture opens up and where the limits of the use of virtual mock-ups lie. How can VR support architects in the implementation of their projects? Are physical mock-ups that serve purely for simulation a model on its way out? What additional possibilities are opened up when we simulate architecture virtually before executing in the real world? For which assignments will a physical mock-up still be indispensable in the future?
