After two years of Corona break, the S AM continues its popular series of double lectures with outstanding personalities of architecture. This time, under the title ‘New Beginnings’, we will present two award-winning architects whose works, themes and forms of work open up new perspectives for architecture.
Cristina Gamboa (*1985) is co-founder of Cooperativa d’Arquitectura Lacol, an architectural practice organised as a cooperative, which was founded in 2014 by 14 graduates of the ETSAB in Barcelona. They want to create spatial structures of communality that support the necessary ecological and social change in society. One of their first built projects, ‘La Borda’, situated in a former industrial area in the Sants district, is Barcelona's first cooperative housing project and also one of the largest wooden buildings in Spain. It quickly became an influential pilot project for sustainable and low-cost housing and has already won numerous architectural awards, most recently the prestigious Emerging Architect Prize of the EU Mies van der Rohe Award.
Saikal Zhunushova (*1982) is a Swiss-Kyrgyz architect who, after studying architecture in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, moved to Switzerland to pursue a master's degree in architecture at the ZHAW Winterthur. After working in various architecture firms, she became self-employed in 2017 with her office Oekofacta GmbH. In her projects, she explores the possibilities of ecological construction using local building materials and traditional building techniques as well as the greatest possible participation of the future users of her buildings. She produces tutorial videos on ecological building to promote an understanding of good building and to help people who want to participate in the construction of their own homes to avoid structural damage. Her first work, the conversion of an old historic hall house in the Zurich Oberland, was voted ‘Building of the Year’ 2021 by the readers of Swiss Architects.
Cristina Gamboa's lecture will be given in English, Saikal Zhunushova's in German. After the lectures, there will be a short Q&A with Andreas Ruby, Director of the S AM.
The event is generously supported by Hans und Renée Müller-Meylan Stiftung.
